For many people who are working professionally with languages, writing a book is a dream … Because I strongly believe that you make your own dreams, I decided to give it a go!

It was a process of iteration and re-iteration. I killed many of my darlings. Writing was a continuously agonising journey during which I wanted to do better, be clearer and make the best of my own language.

Writing also forced me to take a closer look at how I use my own language. What choices did I make instinctively; was this the best way to express what forming in my head? I had to think differently about language, which made me a better translator in the end.

Don't tell me the moon is shining;
show me the glint of light on broken glass
